stop, take some time to think; figure out what's important to you. The air was crisp and fresh and the leaves where blowing in the wind as the dying brown leaves made their way down onto the stone walkway of the Milwaukee Zoo. The sun was trying to make an entrance behind the still full trees or the cages or the tall buildings. Though you could still see it clear as day. It's just that it wasn't as big of show stopper as it usually was. Yet it was cool enough to go around in jeans and a light jacket. Currently, Evan was here. At the Milwaukee Zoo. Hands in pockets as he had a big, friendly smile on his face. Every person who he came across was greeted with a friendly "Hello!" and an even happier smile. Little boys' hair were ruffled and little girls usually were entertained with some sort of mini-show by Evan.
Yet his heart hurt. Every move he made, every person he saw, his heart ached. He had just come back from the Lucas and Sons building where he and his father worked where he had seen his father. With nearly sixty years under his father's belt, Camden Jasper Lucas demanded attention everywhere he went. With a loud, robust baritone voice with a worn but still ever-present Irish accent and two dimples where always in the center of his cheeks when he smiled, he made it hard not to be noticed. And his antics, like Evan's, made himself known to everyone as well. His hair was turning gray, but it still showed its boyish sunset orange color that he had as a boy who had matured into a young man in Ireland. His father had packed on a few pounds over the years, but he still was taller than most, standing a nearly six foot one. Just with a slight pot belly. Though Evan towered over him at his full adult height of six foot three and a quarter inches.
Today would have been his mother's fifty-eighth birthday. Often times, and usually late at night when he could no longer control his thoughts, he had dreams and thoughts about his mother. What she would have been like, would he have been an older brother? What she would have looked like? Would his parents have stayed together? All those questions and so many would would plague him late at night and on today's date. He couldn't help noticing all the mothers and grandmothers with little children here today. Most people would have avoided the zoo, where older women would go with their children and grandchildren. And yet, Evan went here every year on today's date. Twenty-three years ago today, his mother had taken him to th zoo. That was the reason why he was here, plain and simple. Usually people went to grave sites or church, but not Evan Lucas. The zoo was where he felt most connected to his mother. Yeah, sure it was probably way beyond crazy, but it made Evan feel better.
Coming back to where he stood, he realized that he had followed a group of people and they were now all standing just a few feet away from large, powerful tigers. Folding his arms into his chest, Evan stood in awe. Tigers had always been his favorite land animal--sharks being his first--and as a child his father had always nicknamed him Tiger. Even today it had remained. When the Lucas men had been on the nomadic spree of covering every inch of the world after Noelle had died, they had gone to India for a few months, and Evan had gotten to see, up close and personal, so many tigers while they had gone on a safari. Evan tried to pay attention to the man speaking, but it was simply too hard not to think.

From a young age she saw them as a caging ground for animals, which wasn't fair at all. Animals were meant to be free, not caged and used for entertainment that way. Mom and dad constantly tried to take her on day trips to the zoo back home, but she would have nothing to do with it. Only once had she really gone, that she could remember, aside from when she was just a baby. While she enjoyed herself, she hadn't wanted to make a habit of it.
As she grew older, that feeling intensified for awhile. But it died down as she saw the positive sides to the zoo as well. Though she didn't make regular visits and tried to avoid it when possible. That day, avoidance wasn't possible. She had to go interview one of the keepers for a writing piece she was doing in school. It was about, oddly enough, the effects of caging on animals througout their life versus their life in the wild. Something she had been on the edge about for awhile now. That morning she headed out with her voice recorder, pen and notebook in tow, along with her usual things like her cell phone, mp3 and purse full of other essentials.
Wrapping a scarf around her neck and placing shades on her face, Wynter left her home dressed in a simple grey dress, stockings and boots. The weather was cool, but the long sleeves on the dress kept her warm, along with the scarf and stockings. It was early when she got in her car and headed to the zoo to complete the interview. It hadn't long, just a few statements and questions, then she was finished. After shaking the man's hand and flashing a bright smile, she was on her way. Her straight brown hair blew about in the wind as she walked through the zoo, pulling the sleeves of her dress down over her hands. It was cooler then she really had anticpated. Though she would be leaving any minute now, as soon as she could find the exit. Having never really come to this zoo, or any zoo for that matter, she was a little lost.
A frown gently pulled over Wynter's delicate facial features. Where the heck was she? Crossing her arms over her chest to keep herself warm, one foot moved in front of the other as she walked along the path ways of the large zoo. Her wedge heeled boots made a slight clacking noise as the stepped along over the pavement beneath her feet. Brown eyes darted to the signs along the path from behind large sunglasses, though it wasn't too sunny. Her contacts helped her to see each sign, though she felt nothing from the moment they had been placed in that morning. Grabbing the sunglasses off her face, she slipped them into her bag so she didn't look like an idiot.
With a darting glance to the side, she quickly read the sign. Elephants were left, Tigers were straight, Giraffes were left. That was great and all, but which way to the exit? The frown failed to leave her face as she pursued the straight path before her. No use turning and ending up heading in a circle. Besides, she was pretty sure this was the way she had come from. As she headed down that path, a large group of people moved towards the direction she was headed, leaving the tiger section. Trying to move out of their way, Wynter bumped into one accidentally and her purse was knocked from her arm. First thing was first, she quickly said sorry to the woman. Then she bent down ot pick up her bag. Once it was back on her shoulder, she moved forward.
Only to almost walk into someone else as she looked up. "Sorry!" she said quickly, looking up at the taller man before her. Then a crease formed in her forehead as Wynter wrinkled up her nose. Evan. Someone she knew, what were the odds. But someone she wasn't exactly fond of, for whatever reason. Wyn just got a bad vibe from him, found him to be too annoying for her liking. "Uh, yeah, sorry," she repeated, shaking her head slowly as she brushed her hair from her face. He didn't look thrilled really, more like he had been in thought. She bit her lip awkwardly.

stop, take some time to think; figure out what's important to you. Unlike everyone else who had become transfixed by the tigers, with their shiny and full fur coats in beautiful bright color and dark-as-night black, jagged stripes, Evan turned around to another, well not animal, but someone who could have given off the appearance of being a tiger or a lion in a past life simply because of the look she gave him; if that even made sense. Wynter Austin. They had met a few times here and there, at parties or out on the street, but not enough times for Evan to pull out his other hand from his pocket and begin to count how many times they had met. And yet, every time they saw each other, Evan had either said something uncharacteristic or had done something that did not sit well either himself, or from the looks on Wynter's face, her either.
"Oh, it's quite alright Miss Austin." he said, his smoother, suaver line completely gone out the window once he opened his mouth. "Are you alright?" he asked, though she looked completely fine, he still wanted to ask. As the two stood there, Evan felt as if his shoes were now one with the cement. He couldn't move, nor could he speak. Or at least, speak with anything other than rambles and babbles. He took in a sallow breathe, and moved his left hand up to his hair, letting it slide along his scalp and through his hair, a nervous habit he had never managed to kick since childhood. Though as a child he used to look directly at someone's feet for the duration of the conversation. His father thought it was bad public speaking, since he wanted his young son to be able to one day take over the family business, Evan had taken public speaking classes since the ripe old age of ten. But now, he felt as if he was ten years old again, reciting some pointless line of poetry or a monologue from Shakespeare that he had to memorize and perform for his class and his teacher.
Then suddenly, Evan felt his feet sway to and fro slightly as he put his hands into his pockets. Smiling again, he felt as if he should say something. "So, Miss Austin, please forgive my assumption, but you don't look like the type of person to go to zoos. May I ask why you're here?" he asked, with a raised eyebrow. As soon as the words came out of his mouth, however, he felt like Homer Simpson and he mentally heard himself say "D'oh!" like the cartoon character did. "Never mind, don't answer that if you don't want to. It was merely my curiosity getting the better of me. Which happens quite often I'm afraid." he told her, his tone returning to its normal, light, airy and happy-go-lucky tone of voice.
As Evan stood in front of Wynter, he could not help but to look at her. He nearly towered over her, as she was probably a little over five feet and some odd amount, with a petite but full figure. Her skin was much darker than his and her hair was also darker. Where Evan had light skin, Wynter looked as if she either was naturally that color or she spent time out in the sun. Where her hair was long, a bit wavy and dark, Evan's was short, but still full and naturally blond. A few times in his younger days he had colored it to be either dark brown or black, but eventually he went back to his natural hair color. Realizing what he was doing, he shrugged it off and then crossed one leg over the other, as if ready to do a stretch where all he had to do was bend down so he could touch his toes. Noticing the crowds move and the voices pick up, he remained where he was until after they passed. "So how have you been since the last time we saw each other?" he asked, somewhat out of the blue and a change of subject.

No, Wynter didn't truly hate anyone, she wasn't the type. But Evan just didn't sit right with her, he hadn't from day one. They first met at a surprise party for a mutual friend of their's, Jason Fields. Wynter had known Jason for some time, and Evan had been his friend for a lot longer then that. Since then they had run into each other several other times, each making Wynter feel a little more off about the guy, though she couldn't place her finger on a reason why. It was weird for her, since she liked just about everyone she met, looking past anything others might find odd or also annoying.
"Oh, it's quite alright Miss Austin. Are you alright?" Wynter nodded her head quickly, in a fast and non-verbal response to his question. He didn't look to comfortable, standing there in front of her. Was it because he felt off about her as well? Or did he act this way with everyone? From what she could remember, he always seemed a little uncomfortable when they ran into each other. Perhaps he wasn't a huge fan of her either. Normally something like that would bother the young brunette, but seeing as she felt the same way about him, she couldn't really get upset over that. Crossing her arms over her chest in a bit of a defensive stance, she rocked her weight from one foot to the other. "So, Miss Austin, please forgive my assumption, but you don't look like the type of person to go to zoos. May I ask why you're here?" Wynter looked around slightly, then began to open her mouth to reply, but was interjected by his words. "Never mind, don't answer that if you don't want to. It was merely my curiosity getting the better of me. Which happens quite often I'm afraid." Thin shoulders moved up and down in a shrugging motion as Wynter shook her head. Though she wasn't his biggest fan, she still tried to be polite. Plus, it made her curious how he had assumed she wasn't the zoo type. "Don't worry about it," she told him, one hand reaching up to tuck her hair behind her ear, then resting ever so lightly on her collar bone, the hair intertwined through her fingers. A typical stance for Wynter. "I was doing an interview for a school assignment," she said simply, the usual cheery tone to her voice just slightly present. Trying to sound friendlier, she added, "And you can call me Wynter. Why do you assume I'm not the zoo type?"
Even with her heeled boots, she still had to look up slightly to make eye contact with him. With her sunglasses off, she could clearly see his face, and he could see hers as well. It was hard to deny that he was a cute guy, though she didn't really have an interest in him. Barely even the interest to be his friend, a very odd thing for the young woman. The only other person Wynter could think of not being to friendly with at the present time was a guy in her class who had made rude comments to her on several different occasions. Before that had been Charlotte, but the two were now friends. Her thoughts were broken by his voice. "So how have you been since the last time we saw each other?" Since she felt like all she had been doing was shrugging since she ran into him, she verbalized her answer this time around. "I've been good," she answered, adjusting the strap of her bag where it rested on her shoulder. "Really busy," she added with a bit of a sigh. "Yourself?" Maybe it was the fact that she didn't really have this same feeling towards anyone else that made her stay to talk to him.

stop, take some time to think; figure out what's important to you. Really the only thing Evan seemed to be doing up until that moment was nodding. Everything Wynter said, his reply had been in the form of a nod or a soft, "mmm-hmm". It was quite pathetic and very unlike him. Though not the life of the party, Evan usually tried to think of something either clever or smart Aleck-y. But the smart Aleck comments were usually reserved for people he was closer with. People like his father or his good friends. He didn't like the fact that while in Wynter's presence, he was simply standing and nodding, his head bobbing along.
"And you can call me Wynter. Why do you assume I'm not the zoo type?"
"Okay then, Wynter. Well, I just remember at Jason's party you avoided the meat, so I just assumed you were a vegetarian. I figured that coming to a zoo would be the last thing you wanted to do. All these caged animals and such." he said calmly with a shrug as he looked around at the tigers.
Watching her body language also gave him the opinion, but he would not be telling her that. But, then again, every time he had come across her, she seemed to want to bolt in the other direction away from himself. Thinking further into their past encounters, Evan racked his brain to see if he was correct, or if it was only his eyes and imagination playing tricks on him. But, try as he might, she always seemed to avoid him or suddenly turn very serious and sour. Why that was, he had no idea. It bothered him very much, as he prided himself on being a "nice guy", a "down to earth guy", even a "people person". But maybe he wasn't. "An assignment? That must be exciting. I confess, the only reason why I'm here is for an old family tradition my mother and I used to do. Today would have been her birthday." he said, offering only that.
There conversation seemed to flow easily enough, even though she seemed to want to be anywhere else but standing next to him. Again, he racked his brain as to anything he could do to show her that he wasn't a bad guy. The possibilities of her past boyfriends and experiences with men must have been horrible if she believed everyone to be like her exes, if she even had any bad boyfriends. It wasn't like h knew anything about her and his judgments were purely his own thoughts. His thoughts could be a thousand miles from the truth about Wynter's past. Yet, he wanted to stay and get to know her. He wanted to show her that he wasn't a bad guy. "Oh, I've been okay. Work has been hectic and I don't want to bore you with details. I hung out with Jason and his son the other night. Christopher is such an amazing kid." he told her with a smile, unsure as to why he decided to bring Christopher Fields into their conversation.
Then, Evan decided to change the subject. It would either work or Wynter would become enraged and she would slap him and possibly cause a scene. Though she didn't seem like the type to do such things. She seemed very calm, very lady-like. She seemed like she could hold her composure at almost anything. Yet, and again, it could have been Evan's eyes playing tricks on him, she never seemed to feel comfortable around him. And Evan being Evan, did not like to see people in uncomfortable states. He did like her; she was beautiful and she was smart and so many other things that was hard to express, and he simply wanted to get to the bottom of whatever was bugging her, even if it was himself. He was not so prideful that he could not take negative comments. "Is it me, or do I get the feeling like I've done something to anger you? If I have, than please accept my sincerest apologies. It just feels like every time I see you, you close yourself up to me immediately. Honestly Wynter, I'm not a murderer. Well, I do eat meat and I suppose you would call that murder. But, honestly, I can be nice if you allow yourself to get to know me." he said, putting himself completely at the mercy of Wynter's thoughts and feelings. Looking back, perhaps he should not have done it. But he couldn't change the past, no matter how many times he wished he could do so.

Not that she would just bolt away from him, but she wanted to know for when this little conversation ended. "Okay then, Wynter. Well, I just remember at Jason's party you avoided the meat, so I just assumed you were a vegetarian. I figured that coming to a zoo would be the last thing you wanted to do. All these caged animals and such." It seemed to her that he fueled the conversation, so she didn't know how long it would last. Though her thoughts turned from that to how he had remembered her eating habits from the party and she couldn't help but raise an eyebrow. "Well, you'd be right," she admitted with a nod and a small smile. At least he understood her reasoning, she didn't even have to explain it would seem. Which was nice for once. Everyone always questioned her on being a vegetarian, even her own mother who worried about her health. But Wynter stayed very healthy, eating right to replace the protein in her diet.
"An assignment? That must be exciting. I confess, the only reason why I'm here is for an old family tradition my mother and I used to do. Today would have been her birthday." Her view switched back to Evan, looking up ever so slightly to meet his eyes. "Oh, I'm sorry," she said, the sweet and caring side of her, better known as the normal side, coming out. Her voice was genuine as she offered her condelence. "Were you close?" she asked softly, biting her lip, hoping it wasn't a bad idea to ask the question. Things like that were touchy subjects, and she wished she hadn't asked after saying it. But he may take it the wrong way if she retracted it, figuring she didn't care.
Her last boyfriend had been Nikko, and that hadn't gone over well. The two had gotten in a fight, which lead him to believe they had broken up. Well he had gone ahead and hooked up with some other girl, thinking they were done. Then Wynter had found out and ended things. If he had apoligized and explained it, maybe they would have been on good terms. But they hadn't spoke since, until recently when she found out he would be her partner at her new job. If he hadn't proceeded to be an ass, maybe she wouldn't hate him as much as she did. Oh! That was the one other person she didn't like. Hate was maybe too strong of word, but she extremely disliked that guy. Though that wasn't the reason she had a problem with Evan, not at all.
"Oh, I've been okay. Work has been hectic and I don't want to bore you with details. I hung out with Jason and his son the other night. Christopher is such an amazing kid." Wynter knew the feeling about work. But then Evan went and mentioned Jason and Christopher, which made a smile appear, beyond her control. She loved Jason and his son very much. In fact, Wynter loved kids in general and couldn't get enough of them. "I haven't seen either of them in quite awhile," she confessed with a frown. "But he really is," she smiled in agreement. In the back of her mind she made a mental note to contact Jason as soon as she was free. Before anymore could be said on the subject, the conversation took a turn.
But, honestly, I can be nice if you allow yourself to get to know me." Wyn's eyes couldn't be stopped from widening. It really did take great courage for him to even ask, so she would be polite and reply. But how could she even begin to reply to that? Shaking her head, she frowned. "You haven't made me angry," she told him, figuring it was the truth. It wasn't anger but more like annoyance. As he mentioned he wasn't a murderer, she gave a small smile, but returned to the previous face quickly. "I'm sorry," she said after a moment, offering a real apology. But she didn't know what else to add. Racking her brain, she tried to find the words to continute. Maybe she had been wrong about him, she did feel bad now that he had mentioned it. "You're right, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have made a judgement about you," she admitted shyly. But how could she just give him a chance when she had a bad feeling about it? Though she didn't want to have to be anyone other then herself.... Evan hadn't shown her a side she liked, but was that because she hadn't given him a chance?

stop, take some time to think; figure out what's important to you. With the raise of Wynter's eyebrow, Evan couldn't help but feel a smug little smile make an entrance onto his lips. Almost as if to say, "a-ha!" or, had he been cocky, he would have known that the battle was beginning to turn in his favor. Yet, as the saying went: you can win the battle but lose the war. Or, well, something like that. History terminologies had never been one of his favorite subjects, though he did enjoy history much more than the rest of his subjects. Perhaps it was because he didn't have to add, subject, multiply and do only God knew what with big numbers ladened with coefficients and cosigns. At her comment about the fact that he was correct, he simply toned down his cocky smile and made a slight bow in her direction.
Maybe she liked the fact that he remembered what she had avoided eating. Or, maybe, it appeared to her to be stalkerish and ungentlemanly. Which, of course, Evan had never meant to do. It was simply the fact that at Jason's party, she had just given off "that light" to him. She was so beautiful that night, as she was today. The way she held herself, or the way she talked people (all except him, of course unless she could avoid it), the way she sipped her drinks slowly, as if was actually enjoying them. Evan had known just from that moment that Wynter would forever occupy his mind. Was it love? Perhaps, yes. Evan wasn't the type of person to play the love at first sight card, but he could no longer deny that he simply wanting only to be her friend. Ever since the party, she was almost always with him.
This time when she spoke, Evan's lips turned in the opposite direction. She had mentioned his mother, which was his own fault as he had done so, but he hadn't expected her to say such a thing. Her body language and her, well, her lack of conversation, he thought he would have been okay mention his mother. But he had been wrong. There indeed was more to Wynter Austin that what met the eye. "Oh, not really. She ... she killed herself before I turned two. Postpartum. But she took me here on her birthday the year she died. It's just something I like to do. It--now this might sound crazy--but I feel like I'm close to her here." he said, chuckling softly at his "crazy" idea as he readjusted his hat, a mere habit of trying to take the attention away from himself.
He didn't know why, but he felt as if a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. He had never suspected that talking about his mother to Wynter--of all people--would have made him feel that way. He felt like he could be completely open with her. He liked that very much, as he had never been one for secrets. Though telling the entire story, to anyone really and any story he suspected, would need to a time and a place that was not right now or at the zoo. The next thing he knew, they were talking about Jason and Christopher, as he saw Wynter's elusive smile again. He wanted to see it all time; it was so ... it was so ... beautiful was not the right word, but it would have to do. Though he would have said something else about how wonderful Chris or Jason was, he didn't want to spoil the moment with some pointless line that she probably was already thinking.
As he watched as Wynter shook her head and looked down, Evan's brows furrowed and his smile ceased immediately. Harking back to his previous comments about asking if he had made her angry, he himself felt his muscles harden and his body become stiff with anger. Why had he done it? Yes, he had been known to speak his mind, but he usually only did so when people were about to do something stupid and reckless, such as jumping off a bridge because they had lost their job, or his one old college friend who nearly overdosed from taking too many painkillers after he had failed his bar exam. When she spoke again, he felt as if he had been holding his breathe the entire time and a rush of fresh air came into his lungs. "Oh, I just figured ..." he said, trailing off as he listen again. "Might I ask what the judgment was? Maybe I can fix it and the next time I won't do it?" he asked, sincerely, and perhaps a little too desperately, wanting to know what it was that had shunned Wynter from him.

No offense to him, but she could barely remember meeting him that night. Wyn remembered what she had worn, what others had worn, said, and did too. But Evan hadn't really stuck out in her memory that night. Being her usual self, she couldn't but feel a bit bad for that. Every time since meeting him, it dawned upon her that she hadn't really remember much, perhaps because she tried not too. That made her feel bad as well. She had never really given him much of a chance, he was right. That wasn't very like her and maybe she should be the one trying to change his mind about her. After all, he must think she was pretty rude.
The topic didn't seem to please him and she knew she shouldn't have said anything. Worry clouded over her chocolate coloured eyes. "Oh, not really. She ... she killed herself before I turned two. Postpartum. But she took me here on her birthday the year she died. It's just something I like to do. It--now this might sound crazy--but I feel like I'm close to her here." After he spoke, her mouth hung open just slightly in an 'o' shape. Now she really felt bad about bringing it up. "I... I'm so sorry, I didn't mean too..." she trailed off, looking down at her feet. Way to make yourself look like a complete jerk, she added mentally. The side of her that Evan had seen was really not her at all. Wynter was an extremely caring and sweet girl, not the impolite and icy woman she seemed to be the last few times they had met. Right now she almost wanted to reach out and hug the guy. Though that wouldn't be happening, it was what her instinct was telling her to do. It really was quite sad... Not to mention slightly surprising that he would even tell her that. It would seem she was really wrong about this guy, and guilt was setting in.
The brunette wished that she could figure out why she had made that judgment in the first place. Why she got that bad feeling about Evan. "Oh, I just figured ... Might I ask what the judgment was? Maybe I can fix it and the next time I won't do it?" It should have been apparent he would ask this. Wynter was struggling again to find the words to tell him. She didn't want to insult him really. "It's just..." she sighed as the corners of her pink lips were pulled down into a frown. Taking a few steps to the left, she sat down on an empty bench. It was placed in the middle of the pathway, so you could go around either side. At each end sat a plant box, though it seemed to cold for the vegetation to grow now. As she sat, her nose wrinkled up cutely as she tried to explain. "I wasn't trying to be rude. Really. You must think I'm some huge jerk..." she told him as she glanced up towards him. This was still kinda of weird. Sure he seemed to be much different then she originally anticipated, but she still got this weird feeling around him that she couldn't explain. Looking up, her face was slightly eager. "I'm really not some rude person," she told him. A sigh escaped her lips as she leaned back against the seat of the bench. "I guess I just got this.. This is gonna sound dumb," she admitted. "I got a weird feeling about you?" she said, almost as if it was a question. "I mean, every time we saw each other you kinda just said something off and then I kind of assumed you were some.." Wynter moved her hands around as if it would help her think of the word. "Stuck up rich kid," she mumbled, deciding that would have to do. Frowning, she looked up at him again. "And I'm sorry," she finished with a pleading look.
Though she wasn't really about to try and be Evan's best friend all things considered, she at least wanted him to know that she didn't hate him. Not at all. It was only fair to explain the situation, so that's what she had tried to do for him.

stop, take some time to think; figure out what's important to you. As soon as the words came out of his mouth and he saw Wynter's reaction, he wanted to kick himself. He had not meant for it to come off as "woe is me! My mother died when I was a baby, feel sorry for me" or anything that sounded the least bit like he needed sympathy. It was quite the opposite actually. Yes, sure, there were times, mostly when he was younger, that he had wished he had a mother to make his lunches instead of the chef that the Lucas' had at home. And sure, he wished that his mother had been there to come to see him in the supporting role in his high school's production of Grease. Instead, his father and all the other maids, butlers, drivers and his father's co-workers had secretly come. Though, it was a sight that brought a small little tear to his eye when he saw them out in the audience for the first time, nearly missing his cue and had nearly fallen off-stage while singing Grease Lightin'. And of course his graduations from high school and college, it would have been nice to see his mother's smiling face in the crowd. But, in a weird little way, it made him stronger and his bond with his father that much better.
"No, please don't be sorry. You didn't know and, yeah, sure it's hard, but it happened a long, long time ago." he said with a reassuring smile and a shrug. Evan put his hands back into his front pockets and began to rock back and forth on his heels as he listened to Wynter say she had not seen Jason or Christopher. He wondered if he should mention his meeting with them in a few days, then he listened a little more closely and opted not to. It would probably make her feel worse simply because, a, he had brought them up randomly and really without thinking about it, and b, she had said that she hadn't seen them in a while and perhaps while he mentioned that he would be seeing them soon it would only make her feel worse. But perhaps he should tell Jason when he saw him next? After all, he and Wynter were both friends and telling Jason that he had bumped into their mutual friend, Wynter Austin would do no harm? But, then again, maybe it would be best just to keep it to himself.
Her next statement did surprise him, however. As Wynter seemed to struggle for words for her thoughts, he followed her to the bench where she had taken a seat calmly and looked at her as he took a seat beside her. He thought about offering a smile, but then he decided not to, as it might appear smug as if he had another agenda with her; which he did not. He simply wanted to know more about this young woman named Wynter Austin with the dark hair and eyes and an intriguing personality that spanned over many areas that most people would probably only would dream about being able to posse in their wildest dreams and thoughts. After she finished, Evan raised his eyebrows and made an "oh, I see" kind of face. He was glad that she seemed to trust him enough to reveal the truth she had been feeling about him, but he wished he could have done something else to have made her not thing that he was simply a stuck up rich kid.
"Well, Miss--I mean Wynter, I'm sorry that you felt that way, but trust me: you are not the first, or even the last, person to feel that way about me. I guess it's just comes with the territory of being a Lucas, really." he said lightly. "Now, if you will excuse me, I must be off. I don't want to keep you from your assignment and I usually go see the penguins next. Tradition and all. But please, be safe around here and I truly am looking forward to your assignment. Just, try not to be too hard on us meat eaters." he said, keeping his tone light-hearted and pleasant as he stood up and began to walk off toward the direction of the massive crowds of people before she could say anything else.
